5TH STATE (KERALA) WOMENS’ CONFERENCE - A GRAND MAGNIFICENT AND MEANINGFUL TRADE UNION EVENT
Alakapuri Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram, the venue of 5th State Women’s Conference was swarmed with lady comrades clad in blue, from early morning on 22nd January, 2012. They came even from the northern part of Kerala (Kannur Dist). Before the commencement of the meeting, the venue was overflowing with lady delegates, state committee members and activists.
The day long programme started with registration of delegates. Com. P.V. Sivasankara Pillai, President, State Committee hoisted Organisation Flag amidst vociferous chanting of ‘AIBOC Zindabad’ by enthusiastic women officers led by Com. Puspa G. Kumar, Secretary, womens wing National Committee, Com. Omana V. Thomas and Com. Maymol Mathew, the Chair person and Secretary respectively, of women’s wing, Kerala.
After welcome song, Com. Abraham Shaji John, State Secretary and General Convener, delivered the welcome address.
Sri. G. Karthikeyan, Hon’ble speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly after lighting the traditional lamp delivered his inaugural address. He commended the role played by the banking industry in its efforts to sustain the economy of the country even in a situation of turmoil caused by the recession in US and Europe.
Dr. T.N. Seema MP delivered the key note address. She emphasized the need of regulating the Micro Finance Institution that are exploiting the common man and affecting the Banking Sector adversely. She referred to the role of women power, even in overthrowing the Egyptian President and asked the lady officers to extend their support to solve various issues concerning the women officers including the regulated working hours. Dr. Seema also presented Deedi Dayabai, social activist, a citation in honour of her splendid service to the most under privileged section of the society, especially for the cause of the tribals in Madhya Pradesh.
Deedi Deyabai during her speech narrated her personal experience on the plight of tribals in Madhya Pradesh who are under exploitation for decades. She expressed the opinion that bank officers can take up the cause of the distressed and down trodden. She also thanked the Organisation for honouring her.
Com. Siva Sankara Pillai, State President AIBOC offered felicitation. He stated that the organisation should always be watchful like seagull against any impending danger. He touched up on the position of the organisation on issues like Khandelwal Committee recommendations, 10th Bipartite, lateral recruitment, consolidation of retirees and other relevant matters.
Com. Pushpa G. Kumar, Secretary, National Womens Council recalled the activities of women officers over the years. She elaborated on various issues concerning the officers. She requested the leadership of AIBOC to arrange exclusive training programme for lady offices for leadership development, public speaking, defence assistance etc.
Com. Omena V. Thomas, Chairperson of State Womens Wing presided over the inaugural session, and Com. Maymol Mathew, Secretary proposed vote of thanks.
Conference elected Com. Maymol Mathew as Chairperson, Com. Omena V.Thomas as Secretary and Com. Jaya Lekshmi Jaya Kumar as treasurer for the next term.
As a curtain raiser of the conference, the organising committee conducted a seminar on ‘Working Women: Career and Social issues” on 22nd December, 2011, headed by Smt. K. Chandrika, worshipful Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, as patron. Prominent personalities like Smt. Jameela Prakasam MLA, Smt. Sobha Koshy, Chief PMG, Kerala, Smt. R. Parvathi Devi, Journalist, Smt. Indira Raveendran, Advocate and working President, Kerala Mahila Sangam etc attended.
The office of the organising committee was inaugurated at ABOA Unit, SBT office by Smt. K. Chandrika the worshipful Mayor, Thiruvananthapuram. During the occasion Dr. A.G. Olima, Dist. President of AKPCTA spoke on “women officers and Trade Union activists.”
The conference was organised in a splendid and meticulous manner. The dignitaries, guests and delegates were in all praise for the style and content of the conference. The Thiruvananthapuram Dist. Committee did a commendable job in conducting one of the best women’s conference. We compliment our State Unit leadership and women’s wing leadership for the success of the Conference.
