RBI has granted an in-principle approval for a proposal to promote small local banks by the private sector players. Many see this as a new version of the local area bank schemes, withdrawn over five years ago. These banks will have an area of operations up to three contiguous districts. The approval has been given based on the recommendations of the Raghuram Rajan committee, appointed by the Planning Commission.
