BANKS: TOP LEVEL EXECUTIVES MAY SOON GET SCARCE

While speaking at BANCON 2009, senior bankers have expressed concerns over the leadership pipeline with 58 executives belonging to senior management in banks set to retire in 2012 and nurturing top level talent will be a major challenge for the banks.

MV Nair, chairperson, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), said that the country’s public sector banks had hired top level talent in a big way in the early seventies whom they nurtured over the years. Now they are set to retire over the next three years. In the subsequent years, banks went slow on hiring leading to a virtual stop in recruitments in the nineties and this is bound to create a void at the top. Though hiring has picked up in the past few years, the challenge to nurture top level talent will continue and this needs to be seriously addressed.
