Mr. Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister of West Bengal and a legendary leader of toiling masses, passed away on Sunday at 11.47 am due to multi-organ failure.
Mr. Basu was born into an upper middle class Bengali family in Kolkata in 1914. He studied at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Kolkata and graduated from Presidency College with honours degree from the Arts Faculty. He did his law in U.K.
While doing his Law, he was introduced to the Communist Party of Great Britain. On returning to India after qualifying for the Bar, he became a full time activist of Communist Party of India and became involved in trade union activities more so among railway workers. He got into electoral politics in 1946 when he was elected for the first time to the Bengal Legislative Assembly. After Independence, he was continuously elected as member of the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal starting from 1952.
In 1977, Mr. Basu became the Chief Minister of West Bengal and continued till 2000, when he announced his retirement from electoral politics. Mr.Basu was the longest serving Chief Minister in the Country. Mr. Basu would have become Prime Minister in 1996, had the CPM Party allowed him to occupy the chair. The party's decision not to head a multi-party regime, was later termed as "historic blunder".
With his death, our Country has lost a legendary politician and trade union leader. Mr. Basu always held "a leader is a servant of the masses and members are masters".
CBOA, AP dips its banner in demise of Com. Jyoti Basu, legendary politician and leader of toiling masses.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
