After sluggish November, bank lending picked up nearly five-fold in December over the previous month. According to the latest RBI figures, total loans, including food credit amounted to Rs.29,41,293.07 crore as on December 19. This represents a sequential growth of Rs.34,028 crore since November 27 compared to a growth of Rs.7,698 crore in the whole of November. Of this, non-food credit grew Rs.31,342 crore in December, compared to Rs.5,247 crore in the entire month.
With the economy posting strong growth in the second quarter of the year, credit demand is expected to pick up, which has already started reflecting in the recent fortnight.
