TAKE STEPS TO UPGRADE TALENT POOL, BANKS TOLD

According to Mr. R. Gopalan, Secretary (Financial Services), Ministry of Finance, public sector banks are required to upgrade their talent pool in order to live up to the growth expectations of the industry and the public.

Impart training
He said that the banks should take steps to upgrade the existing training institutes into centres of excellence to impart training for specific skills such as treasury management, corporate credit, retail products and other such skills needed to work in a bank.

“Overseas training of trainees is another major area which should be promoted by banks,” said Mr Gopalan.

He added that the time to recruit people also needs to be cut short.

He said that challenges continue to exist in finding banking personnel who can speed up decision-making processes as well as finding a large band of enterprising managers.

“The challenge is how we train people for soft skills to cater to the customer. At the moment 30 per cent of the banking staff are engaged in customer service and 70 per cent do the back-office job. This needs to turn around and 70 per cent should service the customer while 30 per cent should do the back-office job,” said Mr Gopalan.

Meanwhile, the State Bank of India Chairman, Mr O. P. Bhatt, said the banking sector would need at least 10-20 lakh trained personnel in the next five years.
