STATE BANK OF MYSORE SEEKS UNIQUE ID TAG FOR ‘FINANCIAL INCLUSION'

As a registrar for the Unique Identity (UID) programme, State Bank of Mysore hopes to dovetail its financial inclusion programme with the UID project so that its financial inclusion customers will get an ‘aadhaar' number. This is possible if the Finance Ministry and the RBI approve the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) proposal to make the ‘know your resident' (KYR) norms equal to ‘know your customer' (KYC) norms.

Iris capturing
“If we do an ‘iris' capturing in addition to what we are doing for financial inclusion, we could give these customers an UID number. So we could dovetail the two,” Mr Dilip Mavinkurve, Managing Director, State Bank of Mysore, told Business Line. This could be a big boon for banks like his, which are registrars for the UID project. “We are talking to enrolment agents for getting this done,” he said.

He explained that the bank issues smart cards both for its financial inclusion programme and the electronics benefit transfer (EBT) project, which it is doing on behalf of the Karnataka Government. The process involves an account opening form for KYC getting the photograph and fingerprints of customers, “and all that UID needs in addition to what we are doing is capturing the iris,” he pointed out. He hopes that the approval for making KYR and KYC norms “equal” will happen soon.

Lead districts
He also pointed out that the State government was also an UID registrar for two districts in Karnataka — Tumkur and Mysore. “Both these districts happen to be our lead districts, and once KYR becomes KYC, we want to use the data for our financial inclusion also.”

State Bank of Mysore has been allotted 269 villages in Karnataka for financial inclusion, and about a dozen villages in Tamil Nadu. “We have already commenced our financial inclusion programme which involves issuance of smart card and the BC (business correspondent) model in one district, Chamarajnagar, which also happens to be our lead district,” he said.
