NATIONWIDE STRIKE HITS BANKING OPERATIONS PARTIALLY

Banking operations were partly affected across the country on Friday due to a day-long strike by employees of public sector and old private sector banks in protest against reforms in the sector.

While the banking operations remained paralysed in West Bengal, Bihar and Amritsar, the impact was partial in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra.

"Nearly 10 lakh employees, including officers, were on strike in about 65,000 branches across the country affecting banking operations," All-India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) Convenor CH Venkatachalam claimed.

The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the umbrella body of nine trade unions, in protest against banking sector reforms.

These include reduction of government shareholding in PSU banks, allowing more voting rights to shareholder and outsourcing of jobs.

However, employees of new age private sector banks such as Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank Yes Bank and foreign banks stayed away from the strike. Venkatachalam said clearing operations were hit as the PSU banks did not participate in the inter-bank transactions. The strike, he added, also affected the forex operations in the banking sector.

State-run banks account for 70% of the total banking operations in the country.
