The West Bengal government on Friday warned nationalised banks against attempts to delay payment of salaries to State government employees despite the amount being deposited through the electronic clearance system.
Under West Bengal government's e-Payment of Salary Scheme, 2009, the salaries of all State government employees are to be paid through credit to their bank accounts, either through Electronic Credit System (ECS) or by way of payment being credited through a designated bank in the employee accounts, latest for the salary month of September, 2011.
According to the West Bengal Finance Minister, Mr Amit Mitra, attempts to blame the government for not depositing the salary amount of employees are “totally incorrect” as the amount had already been deposited in respective salary accounts.
“We will investigate complaints and, if required, blacklist branches which have deliberately defaulted in clearing salaries,” Mr Mitra told reporters at Writers' Buildings.
The banks, however, feel that the delay, if any, was primarily on account of technical glitches. “This is the first month that we have moved to e-payment of salaries of State government employees so there will be some technical issues. However, this will soon stabilise,” said a senior official at United Bank of India, which holds more than one lakh salary accounts of State government employees.
