The government has said that the banking sector will be out of the purview of competition watchdog once the amendments to the banking law are passed.
"If the Banking (Laws) Amendment Bill, 2011 is passed, then mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector will be taken out of the purview of Competition Commission of India," corporate affairs secretary Naved Masood told reporters at the sidelines of a function.
However, if any bank was guilty of abuse of its dominant position or anti-competition practices then the CCI had the power to take action under Sections (3) and (4) of the Competition Act.
Corporate affairs minister Veerappa Moily said there's no conflict between CCI and regulators.
