GOVT TO SUPPORT PUBLIC SECTOR BANKS TO MERGE IF THEY WANT

As per the news report appearing in The Economic Times, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister has toled that the government would support PSBs to merge if they wanted, subject to compliance with RBI and SEBI guidelines. He has said that Govt. has itself not taken any initiative to ask PSBs to go for merger but would play a "supportive role" if someone decides to merge. He has also said that no directive on consolidation was being issued by the Govt. or the RBI and the boards of the banks have to take a decision in this regard based on the synergy levels of merging or consolidating entities.
