The Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee will undertake a zone-wise performance review of various public sector banks in the light of concerns over slowdown in credit offtake and rising trend of loans going bad.
The process will get kick-started on September 17, with Mr Mukherjee scheduled to hold a meeting of Chief Ministers of West Zone States along with the chief executives of all PSBs in Mumbai. "There would be a review of State-wise flow of credit in areas such as agriculture, small and medium enterprises, housing loans, education loans besides credit to weaker sections and credit to minorities", sources said.
The Finance Minister is also likely to delve deep into the aspect of increase in non-performing assets (NPAs) in the banking system. Also on the agenda is review of the implementation of centrally sponsored scheme in each State and the steps taken by banks to improve financial inclusion. The performance of regional rural banks (RRBs) and the implementation of aam admi bima yojana will also come up for review, sources said.
Mr Mukherjee is also expected to hold similar meeting with Chief Ministers of East Zone States at Kolkata (October 22), North zone States at Srinagar (October 29) and the Southern States at Chennai on November 4.
