BANKS BACK TO HIRING

At present, about 12,000 positions for officers and clerks have been identified by various banks and some of them have already issued advertisements.

As has been the case during last three years, State Bank of India (SBI) heralded the bulk recruitment by advertising for 6,500 clerical vacancies last week.

The Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI), Union Bank of India, Oriental Bank of Commence (OBC) and State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), among others, are also in the same process.

According to experts, this is just the beginning and another 15,000 to 20,000 vacancies are likely to be filled before the end of current financial year.

GROWING NEED
The continued need for recruitment is driven by expansion of banking, large-scale retirements and also attrition, according to experts.

“According to our data, over 1.25 lakh people have been recruited by banks during last three years. Banks are under massive pressure for expansion of branches as well as marketing departments and hence recruitments become key,'' Mr N. Bhaskaran, Director, Indian Institute of Banking Finance (IIBF), Mumbai, said.

There would be an increased need for education and training within the banks as senior people were retiring, he said.

According to Mr Santanu Paul, CEO of Talent Sprint, skill development organisation for banks and other financial institutions, many studies indicate retirement of nearly 40 per cent of existing seven lakh bank employees in next three to five years.

“According to estimates of National Skill Development Corporation, New Delhi, over 40 lakh people are required for banking and financial sector by year 2020. So, the banks need to continue recruitment,'' he said.

In the days to come, the proportion of campus recruitment and lateral hiring would go up in all banks, he observed.
